Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi's book, Belonging: A Journey of Love, will be published by HarperCollins India on November 10, 2026, the company announced on Friday, September 4, 2026. This occurs a few days after Penguin Random House India declined to publish the book due to a "particular issue."

The "surprising, richly told memoir seamlessly weaves the personal with the political to tell a riveting story," according to HarperCollins India. According to the article, Sonia Gandhi, who was once renowned for her reticence, "opens up with warmth and candour to tell the story of her remarkable life, from her childhood in post-war Veneto; to the romance that brought her to India; to the shattering losses that reshaped not only her own future but also that of her adopted home."

Alfred A. Knopf, a branch of Penguin Random House with headquarters in New York City, announced on August 18 that Ms. Gandhi's book would be released on November 10. Additionally, Knopf had stated that 1,00,000 copies will be printed in the first run of the book.

Due to differences over editing adjustments, Penguin Random House India reportedly decided not to publish the memoir last week. "Any suggestion that Penguin Random House India decided not to publish Belonging because the author declined editorial changes does not accurately reflect the circumstances," the publishing house said in a statement. It is both our right and our duty as publishers to verify information and offer authors suggestions that are best for their publications. It stated that it was still eager to release the memoir.Industry insiders claimed that the publisher and author disagreed on issues pertaining to the author's perceptions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from formal meetings, his management of India-China relations, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its operations.

Sonia Gandhi's book was initially supposed to be published by Penguin Random House India. However, Penguin claims that during its editorial and legal assessment, it had reservations about some sections of the manuscript and recommended revisions and deletions. Penguin has not confirmed that the challenged information was related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RSS, China's colonisation of Indian territory, and other issues.The publisher stated that the talks came to a standstill over "a particular issue" when Gandhi's representatives rejected the suggested modifications, and as a result, they chose not to move forward with the Indian publishing. Since then, whether or not government pressure was involved has become the subject of a political discussion. Penguin has refuted any outside pressure, claiming that its editorial review was a standard procedure for publishing.
